How Many Calories Does Skating Burn?
If your goal is to lose weight or to maintain a healthy weight, skating is an intense cardio exercise that burns significant calories. How many calories you burn depends on your weight and on how long and hard you exercise.
Create a workout and diet plan that includes enough skating, and cuts enough daily calories, to get you fit and keep you there.
Skating to Slimness
To lose 1 pound a week, burn 250 calories with exercise and cut 250 calories from your diet each day, recommends the American Council on Exercise. Determine how much skating to do each day by your weight.
If you weigh 155 pounds or more, 30 minutes of inline skating, on ground or on ice, will burn more than 250 calories; exercise longer if you weigh less than 155 pounds. In 30 minutes, a 125-pound person burns about 210 calories, and a 185-pound person burns about 311 calories, according to Harvard Medical School. Skating faster or harder burns more calories, and skating easier or slower burns fewer.
Traveling at high speeds while balancing on a thin row of wheels can occasionally lead to accidents. The most frequent injury, to the wrists, can be prevented by wearing wrist guards, says the Inline Skating Resource Center.
Wear full safety gear as well to protect the other vulnerable parts of your body: elbow pads, knee pads and a helmet. Even experienced skaters should take a lesson in how to avoid injury.
